Community solar is a new way for anyone to be a solar owner without owning their home, or having a sunny, south-facing roof. Anyone can purchase panels, giving ratepayers the ability to choose their electricity source. Subscribers receive a credit on their electricity bill for the electricity that their panels produce.
Seventeen states currently have legislation permitting community solar. DC and Maryland are in the final steps of making community solar a reality for their constituents. According to NREL, 49% of businesses and 48% of households are unfit to install solar. Community solar allows businesses and households to have access to the same incentives as those with perfect roofs for solar.
